CueCat™ Reader to Receive 2001 Laureate Medal From Computerworld Honors Program
Digital:Convergence™ :CueCat Reader Recognized as Information Technology Innovation With Positive Impact on Society

DALLAS, March 5, 2001-Digital:Convergence Corporation announced today that its :CueCat reader will receive a laureate medal of honor, recognizing the :CueCat optical reader as an information technology innovation benefiting society, from the Computerworld Honors Program on April 8, 2001 at San Francisco City Hall.

The laureate honor, affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution and partner museums in 42 other countries, is given each year to companies whose information technology produces positive social, economic and educational change. Nominated by Ed McVaney, chairman, chief executive officer and president of J.D. Edwards, the :CueCat reader in conjunction with :CRQ software uses embedded cues to link traditional media to the Internet.

"Not only does the :CueCat bridge conventional media with the Internet, this innovative technology offers vast new opportunities for information convergence," said McVaney. "The whole idea of accessing information has just taken a quantum leap."

Digital:Convergence's print-to-Web and broadcast-to-Web technology uses "cues" to empower manufacturers, broadcasters, and publishers to enhance content for consumers. Cues come in two forms: split-second audio prompts or printed codes. Digital:Convergence's printed cues, which look like product codes, can be embedded in most print media and are translated through :CRQ software with a :CueCat device.

Approximately the size of a computer mouse, the :CueCat device reads cues, instantly linking a user's browser to a related Web page. This eliminates the input of lengthy URLs and time-intensive Web navigation. Both the :CRQ software and the :CueCat device are free to consumers. Additionally, the :CueCat device can read any UPC or ISBN on a product, making it instantly interactive with the Internet.

Digital:Convergence's case study will be preserved in the Computerworld Honors Archives Online and the Permanent Research Collections of the institutions of the affiliated Academic & Cultural Institutions worldwide, including the Smithsonian Institution. "Organizations like Digital:Convergence are true innovators in their industry, utilizing information age tools to extend the benefits of technology to society," said Daniel Morrow, executive director of the Computerworld Honors Program.

"Just to be considered for this award is a prestigious honor, but to be recognized as an organization with an innovative use of technology that has an influence on society, is a true achievement," said J. Jovan Philyaw, chairman and chief executive officer of Digital:Convergence.
